Top 20 Nigerian Songs of 2016

Nigerian music hasn’t been at its best this year. However, there were massive revelations. A lot of hard work was put in by sidelined and upcoming artistes and song writers, while it has been a steady movement for the A-list artistes that have been regarded as Nigeria’s favourites. There’s a gradual shift in the kind of songs that dominate the airwaves nowadays. A lot more attention is being placed on songs that not just make you to move your body, but also the lyrics and how the verses are stringed together.

Needless to say, if you aren’t creative in your style of music, you may just become irrelevant in a matter of months. The year is coming to a close and while we strongly doubt that there could yet be a song that will be a nationwide sensation this year, here are our top 20 songs released in 2016:

Pana (Tekno): Tekno has been a massive revelation from 2015 down to 2016 and he has been consistent all year long. His song, Pana has maintained very high rating across music websites and also has enjoyed ample play time in bars and clubs nationwide. We doubt if there’ll be any argument about this one.

Hola Hola (Sugarboy): Sugarboy got it right with this one. Your perfect ‘jam’ for any party setting. Hola Hola was so successful that it sounds like a new song months after it was released.

Band Gang (Ajebutta 22 Feat. Falz): After a super 2015, Falz continued in great fashion by featuring on a track that further showed his creativity. His team up with Ajebutta 22 made the ‘Bad Gang’ song a mega hit across the country.

Owoblow (Olamide): The ‘king of the streets’ came back with this banger. Olamide who is known for his consistency came back with a typical ‘Olamide hit’. Owoblow continues to enjoy the acceptance that his previous songs have enjoyed this year.

Gbagbe Oshi (Davido): After being off the music scene for some months, Sony-signed Davido put this song out there and of course, created a whole new movement. It almost seemed like Davido fans have been waiting for his music.

Bank Alert (P-Square): P-Square have had a very turbulent 2016 laced with internal crises. These challenges threatened their music. However, the famous duo have risen above that to produce ‘Bank Alert’. Do we need to tell you how massive it is? It’s P-Square!

Skin tight (Mr. Eazi x Juls ft. Efya): Another revelation of 2016. Mr Eazi has created a whole new style of music that is certainly accepted by Nigerians.

Who You Epp (Olamide Feat. Wande Coal and Phyno): A freestyle released by Olamide based on a popular slang at a certain period in the year.

Emergency (Dbanj): Just as a popular blog stated; Dbanj got his groove back with this song. Dbanj who has had quite a turbulent music career in recent times, reminded music lovers why he still remains the Kokomaster.

Bubble bump (Cynthia Morgan Feat. Stonebwoy): We didn’t get to see a lot from female artistes this year. However, Cynthia Morgan dropped ‘Bubble Bup’ that reminded us how much talent the young lady has.

Soft work (Falz): Just as we mentioned earlier, Falz has been a sensation all year long. His song ‘Soft Work’ showed that.

Fada Fada (Phyno Feat. Olamide): Phyno showed his ‘religious side’ with this very good song. Featuring Olamide on the track gave it a different feel. You sure will move your body when you hear this song.

No kissing Baby (Patoranking Feat. Sarkodie): It’s always fun when Patoranking is involved. The coming together of a very talented duo made this song reign on the lips of music lovers.

Eleko (Mayorkun): DMW signed artiste, Mayorkun recently released his first song that was top of the music charts for a while. Eleko continues to enjoy decent play-time in radio stations across the country.

Mama (Kiss Daniel): Kiss Daniel has continued to ride on the success of his first song ‘Woju’ by unleashing another banger. Mama is your typical Nigerian club song and it lived up to its expectation as a top song of the year.

Aduke (Tjan): Tjan continues to rise steadily as a very fine artiste and his song, ‘Aduke’ is a major song of 2016. We don’t get a lot of R&B songs nowadays but Tjan made it work with this song.

Tinana (KCee): KCee has also been quite consistent and did a great job with his jam ‘Tinana’. Tinana followed the likes of ‘Limpopo’ and in similar fashion, became a top song of 2016.

Ariwo ko (Adekunle Gold): Popular and unique artiste and a Photoshop expert, Adekunle Gold did it again with ‘Ariwo ko’. The beauty of this music is how relatable it is to situations.

Money (Timaya Feat. Flavour): We all know who Timaya is when it concerns music. Timaya, just like he always does, released ‘Money’ this year and it automatically became a widely played song. Of course, it’s Timaya!

Jombo (Kiss Daniel): Kiss Daniel surely has the talent as he went ahead to drop another song – mostly loved by the female folks. Jombo was released much later in the year and it sure will maintain a decent amount of play-time in coming months.
